The Real World

I haven't completely forgotten about this blog...it's just that my life has literally been turned upside down after attempting to settle into my new job...despite the many changes occurring around me (more on that later...) I'm finally starting to settle in and learn the personalities of those around me. All in all, it's a pretty tough transition, but as long as you utilize your time best when out of the workplace, and appreciate your free time, you're golden.

As Convention Sales Assistant for two National Sales Managers that work meetings 175 peak and less, I manage leads and communicate as a liaison between the client and the hotel and event partners. The goal is to place as many room nights as possible in Fort Worth as well as represent Fort Worth in the most positive light.

It's high-pressure, high-volume and a quick turn-around ate but something about the adrenaline, personal interaction, deadlines or all of the above is exciting to me. I'm still certain social media & online marketing are my passions, but for now this is an excellent stepping stone. I've been introduced to hotel partners and influentials from all over Fort Worth. I am understanding how a non-profit functions as well as the importance of strong, lasting relationships in sales.  So far understanding the mistakes that are made go back to simple communication efforts. It's a job I can learn from, grow from and appreciate. This is a great job and with all the perks, a 7am wake-up call can't be that bad.

I HAVE A REAL JOB!!!!

Woah. I kind of have to take a step back and realize that this is a pretty big deal for me. Although I've had many jobs, I've never actually had a real salary...Oh, the possibilities! I was offered a position as Assistant Convention Sales at the Fort Worth Convention and Visitor's Bureau (long name for Tourism Bureau basically)...If you don't know what a CVB does or how it works, I highly encourage you to visit Fort Worth Convention & Visitor's Bureau. Fort Worth is an incredible destination that brings in over 5 million visitors each year. The job of the CVB is to secure contracts with hotels, promote the city, invite clients on site tours and city tours, and assist in any services or preparations for the client before and during their stay. I work in Convention Sales which brings in an ENDLESS amount of associations...Side note: I'm literally blown away by all of the associations. There is an association-you name it. Oh, and if there's an association already, Texas has eight more with its own associations...point is this is BIG business...especially in terms of the city and it's economy.

Today was my day 4 on the job...and I must say I couldn't have started during a better week. My first day there was a party with cake, ice cream and target gift cards...for Assistant's Day. (Yes, I got one-even though it was just my first day!). The next day I joined some of the ladies from the CVB (all very fun) to the Marriot where we had a welcome lunch followed by a tour. Today, we were invited to a new entertainment venue in town so that we can promote to our clients: Piece of Work. It's a *BYOB* painting studio where the vibe is so relaxing and fun you will melt into your wine while you follow a local artist's painting instructions to create your own masterpiece...Needless to say, I had a good time with this.

Those were some of the fun things I really enjoyed this week...And with the good, comes always the bad. The intranet communication system for the CVB is so deeply and intricately layered that it is so hard to figure out where everything is. So I'm expecting a learning curve which hopefully won't last too long because this system basically controls how I do my job. Also, I'm finding that everyone is so incredibly busy and it is a smaller business that there is no official training of any kind. It's more of a "dive right in" approach. So far, I'm just trying to ask as many questions when I can as possible, but at Day #4, I'm thinking it's gonna take another week or so for me to get it all down.

More on what my job entails in the next post!
